The only South African racing driver ever to be Formula 1 World Champion, was Jody Scheckter in 1979.

Other legends on the grid with Jody in 1979 included Mario Andretti, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet, Gilles Villeneuve and James Hunt.

Jody was one of only two F1 drivers to have competed under the number zero, the other being Damon Hill.

During 1976, Tyrrell introduced the most radical car in F1 history, the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34, which Jody drove to it’s only win on Sweden’s Anderstorp circuit.

After having won the driver’s championship for Ferrari in 1979, twenty-one years passed before another Ferrari driver could accomplish the same feat. That driver was Michael Schumacher.

Jody gives us a tour of his Formula 1 car collection at Laverstoke Park Farm in the video below.
