Lions fly-half Marnitz Boshoff was his team’s hero on Saturday 22 February 2014 with a personal haul of 29 points. His three drop-goals sees him join a special group of only three other Super Rugby players who have achieved this feat in Super Rugby previously. They were:
- Morne Steyn with 4 drop goals (Bulls vs Crusaders 2009);
- Louis Koen with 3 drop goals (Cats vs Bulls 2003); and
- Andrew Mehrtens with 3 drop goals (Crusaders vs Highlanders 1998).
Also interesting is that out of the 12 players to have achieved 2 or more drop goals in a single super rugby match, there is 1 Australian, 1 Kiwi and 9 South Africans. The 12th person is a Frenchman who played for a SA franchise (Freddie Michalak).
Marnitz became the first player to score 100 points in the 2014 Super Rugby season, when he kicked his second penalty in the 40th minute of the match on 22 March 2014.
